Today i did a shoot for the homemade section of my feature. I was limited with the lighting for this shoot and feel the images are a bit too dark, these are juts some quick edits. I chose to go for a rustic home-y sort of look for this shoot as i feel it would fit in in a sunday supplement. I Struggled to make the food look aesthetically pleasing as its just vegetables, but not nice green ones. I have come to realise that this sort of article does not fit the second half of the layout very well as there is a limited amount of shots you can take of recipe without having loads and loads of different foods. I will now rethink my layout and experiment with placing some of my images in to get a feel for the supplement.

So today was pretty unsuccessful. 

Above are my pictures from neals yard, i am pleased with the images I have taken but have realised that whilst it is anice location it is difficult to photograph as there is so many trees and benches in the way. Again i had the same problem with the lighting as areas of the image are over and underexposed. 

I went along to the gallery cafe and unfortunately it was closed due to kitchen refurbishments. I was planning on going the following day after uni but felt it would be wise to leave it a couple of days and possibly go back sunday or monday.

I then went along to the tea rooms to find them closed as well. I managed to accidentally miss checking the opening times and have since found out they are only open at the weekends. I may go back on sunday to take some images, depending on if i have work.

I was unable to visit the other two locations as i didn’t want to rush in each location, however I have found myself limited with time as I am not available most of next week. I was hoping to get al of my images taken by the end of next week (by 27th). I will still aim to have this done but will not be surprised if i don’t manage.

Unfortunately it is pissing it down and since i am focusing on hte insides and outsides of these places, i feel i need to wait for better weather to get a nice ‘day out’ sort of feel to the feature. I have checked the weather and fortunately it is sunyn tomorrow so i will spend most of tomorrow photographing these 5 places.

Today I went to Portobello to visit Mr Falafel King, after doing some research online, i found they have good reviews and have a very small menu of falafel with completementary lemonade. 

However, once getting there, i found out they do not allow pictures to be taken. This is obviously a massive problem. The inside was nicely decorated and would have worked in a sunday supplement feature perfectly. I did manage to get a few pictures of my food and of the outside, however because of the market, i could not get shots that i would have liked to as there were stalls and people in the way.

Today I visited covent garden with colette, my original intention was to go to World Food Cafe but I did not find it, a find a wild food cafe which was also vegetarian so assumed it was that, however this place was closed and i had limited time because I had a lecture in the afternoon, However the Neals Yard Salad Bar, this place did Vegan, Vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. The location was perfect for a sunday supplement and the weather was nice so i thought i’d try to take some pictures for the actual layout. I struggled with the lighting as where it was so sunny and it was in the morning, half of the area was really bright and sunny and the other half was in shade and this is very obvious in most of my images. To eat I had an acai and banana fruit juice and a vegan classic breakfast which contained minced soya meat with onion, red peppers and parsley, fried sweetcorn, baked beans and homemade toast. This was an okay breakfast, it tasted nice but i’m not sure i’d eat it again, the food was photogenic and kind of colourful. I will definitely go back at a better time of day to get more busy establishing location shots and possibly have some more food to photograph. 

The last picture shows a cake from candy cakes in the centre of covent garden, we went there as colette is doing cakes. They were delicious and alot easier to photograph than the breakfast as they look more appealing. 

On Monday 30th I will visit covent garden to go to the vegetarian restaurant World Food Cafe to do a recce.

Possible 4th DPS layouts

1. This layout contains 1 double page - full bleed landscape image, with some text in the bottom right hand corner which helps to end the article. I feel this sort of image would work well in a sunday supplement for food, the text being on the bottom right draws the attention from top left sweeping down to bottom right. This sort of layout would work well  for a establishing shot of one of the cafes in london, with some slight motion blur of people moving with people sat outside, however, I am doing the london places first and then into home made and i’m not sure a picture of just food will work in this sort of layout.

2. This layout has 3 small portrait images and one square half full bleed right image. I’m not sure about the layout of this, The placement of images feels a bit hectic and the eye sort of darts around the page. I don’t think this sort of layout would work well for a sunday supplement magazine and I will not be taking this any further.

3. This layout has one square half full-bleed left image and 3 small square images. This layout works well i feel, it seems ordered and like a sunday supplement. The eye is drawn to the images first and then wanders over to the text which is what I would want to happen. 

4. This layout works well but I feel it is a bit bland, The boarder on the page looks odd compared to the full bleed image. The eye goes form the left hand image and sweeps to the bottom right text which is good but I feel this image does not look right. 

I will experiment with the 3rd and 4th layout using stock images of the sort of pictures I will take, this will give me an idea of how the feature will flow throughout the pages. This will also help me with my shot list. 

I have used images from my research and stock images to get a feel for the types of shot. This example shows the london places images first and then the homemade recipe images after. I like this set up better than the first practice as it has a better flow to it, a feature like this is more likely to show you places to eat and then some recipes to try yourself at home. I will now experiment with the 4th spread layouts to try and find the best layout to finish the feature and keep the flow of the article. 

I have used images from my research and stock images to get a feel for the types of shot. This example shows the homemade recipe images first and then the london places images after. I like this set up but i feel it does not fit the ‘london weekend’ title. I will now rearrange the images to show the london places first, then the homemade ones.
